Types of Burn Injuries
Burn injuries are classified based on the depth of the burn and severity of tissue damage. There are three different classifications:
- First Degree Burns: These are the mildest type of burn injury. Only the surface of your skin is affected, and tissue damage is often minimal. Common symptoms include swelling, redness, and mild to moderate pain.
- Second Degree Burns: These burn injuries affect the surface and dermal layers of your skin, and they are considerably more painful than first degree burns. Symptoms such as blistering, redness, swelling, and infection are common, and severe second-degree burns may require a skin graft as part of treatment.
- Third Degree Burns: These are the most severe type of burn injury you can experience. All layers of your skin are damaged, and the most serious third-degree burns can also impact your bone and connective tissue. The pain is less severe than with second-degree burns since nerve endings are destroyed, but the recovery from these injuries takes a very long time. Reconstructive surgery is often necessary due to the extensive disfigurement associated with third-degree burns.
