Zimmer Persona Recall Information
Less than three years after the Zimmer Persona Knee System was released for use in knee replacement surgeries, the medical device manufacturer announced a Class II recall for the system due to a problem with one of its components, the trabecular metal tibial plate. More than 11,000 Zimmer Persona devices were included in the recall. These devices had been distributed to 25 states, including North Carolina.
According to the Zimmer Persona recall announcement, an unacceptable number of patients had been reporting issues associated with premature loosening of the knee implant and radiolucent lines on x-rays. Radiolucent lines refer to dark lines that appear on x-rays. They are a symptom of a poorly fitting implant, and they indicate a reduction in bone density in the knee.
Complications experienced by Zimmer Persona knee implant patients include:
- Knee pain
- Lack of artificial knee fixation
- Knee implant loosening
- Decreased mobility
- Device failure
- Need for premature revision surgery
According to the recall announcement, 6 out of every 1,000 Zimmer persona implants may fail. This rate is significantly higher than what is achieved by similar devices.
