J&J Slammed With $57M Verdict In Philly Mesh Case

A Philadelphia jury awarded $57.1 million in damages to a woman who alleged
that Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, Ethicon, were responsible
for her mesh-related injuries. The plaintiff’s attorneys alleged
that its transvaginal mesh device eroded through her urethra, leaving
her internally scarred and incontinent.

The jury award, handed up on Thursday, was composed of $7.1 million in
compensatory damages and $50 million in punitive damages. As reported
by Law360, the jury was unanimous in finding in favor of the injured plaintiff,
determining that two of Ethicon’s mesh devices caused her internal
injuries and permanently damaged her urinary system.

The plaintiff’s attorneys are encouraged that this verdict will make
it clear to J&J and Ethicon that the design and marketing of the surgical
mesh devices was highly improper. They were “pleased the jury recognized
the recklessness of J&J and hope the company takes notice of the verdict
and adjusts accordingly” said one of the plaintiff’s attorneys.
