Essure Implant Will No Longer Be Sold in the US
After years of controversy and tens of thousands of complaints from women
injured by the device, the medical device manufacturing giant Bayer has
announced it will discontinue selling the Essure birth control implant
in the United States by December 31, 2018.
The company reports that declining sales are the reason for their decision
to stop selling Essure in the U.S., but many suspect it is because the
implant continues to harm recipients. In 2015, the number of reported
complaints of injuries, illness, and death stemming from the Essure implant
had grown so high that the
FDA began examining the claims and convened an expert panel to review the complaints.
What Is Essure?
Essure is a small, flexible metal coil designed for vaginal insertion into
the fallopian tubes. Over the course of 3 months, the coil is intended
to create scar tissue within the tubes, which would block off the ovaries
and permanently prevent pregnancy. However, many women who received the
implant have experienced painful complications including perforation of
the uterus or fallopian tubes and/or migration of the coil into other
parts of the body often requiring surgical removal of the implant.
Many women who have received the Essure implant have complained of painful
symptoms, such as:
- Abnormal bleeding
- Abscesses
- Aching joints
- Autoimmune deficiency
- Bloating
- Cysts
- Hair loss
- Irregular menstruation
- Lethargy and fatigue
- Painful intercourse
- Pelvic and abdominal pain
- Reduced bowel control
- Serious weight fluctuations
- Tumors
