Zofran Lawsuit Attorney in Raleigh

Popular Anti-Nausea Drug Linked to Birth Defects

Despite the popularity of anti-nausea drug Zofran for the treatment of morning sickness, this drug, generically known as ondansetron, has never received FDA approval for use during pregnancy and is now being linked to the presence of birth defects. If you are an expectant mother currently taking Zofran, or if you took Zofran in the past and your child suffered from birth defects, you may be entitled to take legal action. A Zofran lawsuit attorney in Raleigh or the neighboring areas can help you understand your options and determine the best route of legal action.

Contact Wilson Law, P.A. at (919) 800-0919 today to schedule a free consultation with our experienced Raleigh drug injury attorney.

Why Is Zofran Dangerous?

Produced by drug manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Zofran was originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of nausea and vomiting in post-operative and cancer patients in 1991. After its success as an efficient method for preventing and eliminating the side effects of chemotherapy and post-operative medications, GSK began marketing the drug to pregnant women seeking relief from severe morning sickness.

The drug seems to work, but the problem, however, is that the FDA has never approved Zofran for use during pregnancy due to inconclusive evidence pertaining to its safety. It has been alleged that GSK has been aware of the possible health risks Zofran posted to pregnant women but found ways to manipulate its studies and mitigate the dissemination of the information, thereby keeping the drug from being recalled. It is also likely that GSK promoted the drug’s off-label use by offering unlawful financial incentives to doctors who might be willing to prescribe it.

Though GSK has already been forced to pay more than $3 billion in criminal and civil penalties for the recent 2012 recall of 32mg dosages of Zofran that were linked to fatal cardiac arrhythmia, the drug giant is now being faced with pharmaceutical liability for the damages and injuries associated with birth defects.

Zofran and Potential Birth Defects

Potential Zofran drug injury birth defects can include:

  • Disfigurements, such as cleft lips, cleft palates, and club feet
  • Kidney malformation
  • An abnormally shaped skull that can cause vision problems, eating issues, and mental impairment
  • Heart Defects

Though monetary compensation cannot account for the physical harm your child may have suffered, you have a right to seek justice. Our Raleigh Zofran lawsuit lawyer can help you navigate the legal process, providing compassionate guidance, answers to your questions, and aggressive representation.

If you believe your child has suffered from drug injury birth defects as a result of exposure to Zofran, please contact Wilson Law, P.A. at (919) 800-0919 for a free consultation.
